Black iron is cast iron black the whole way through?
i got a cast iron skillet from my grandmother and the inside bottom is a dull brown color. i don't think it's rust because it won't scrub off--it just keeps coming no matter how much i scrub or wipe it. i almost think it's what's underneath the black exterior of the cookware. Is that possible or is cast iron black the whole way through? (i haven't seasoned it yet and don't know when it last was, if ever) is anything wrong with it?
Cast iron skillets are cast iron all the way through (some of the newer cast iron *pots* --called "Dutch ovens"-- may also be coated with colored enameling inside and/or out, but not cast iron skillets).
The brown color you see is either the "natural color" of the iron somewhat oxidized or actual rust layer (which has to be sanded off... scrubbing won't do much). The black color eventually happens to a very well seasoned cast iron piece because it's had some kind of fat baked onto it many-many-many times, which also makes the surface fairly non-stick (and that smooth black color is highly prized!).
You should definitely hang onto that one though (and fix it up) rather than buying a new one because the older ones were much smoother from the start and make the best and quickest non-stick surfaces!
There are various ways to fix up old cast iron skillets (and many people prowl thrift stores, etc., just to find them), but basically you'll need to sand them smooth (opinions vary on what to use), then "season" with fat and lots of heat for a few hours. (Many people also feel the first use should be with something really fatty and/or fried.) After that, every time the skillet is used (and rinsed and oiled again properly) it will build up more and more of that wonderful well-seasoned black surface.

I am half black, and I have thick coarse hair. I use a flat iron by Nano. It is expensive but well worth it. It would straighten my hair when I would get out of the shower and let it air dry. My hair would be super curly and the Nano flat iron would make it bone straight. You can get it at Sally's.

How do I get black junk off of my steam iron?
My husband irons shirts every morning before work. Lately, he's been complaining that the iron has a black or brown residue that won't come off. I've taken brillo pads and hot water to it, and I've used cleaning products. I've managed to get it off several times, but it keeps coming back. Any suggestions? He's not ironing t-shirts with logos or meltable things. They're dress shirts. He's a fantastic "ironer" so it's not that he's running the iron over something.
If you go to Linens n Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond in the iron section they have this stuff in a little tube that you put on an old washcloth and then you iron the cloth and the black stuff comes right off. Don't scrub your iron with a brillo pad, you are just going to make deep scratch marks, which is going to make it easier for black stuff to get into.
