How can I make my roof into a deck?
We have a single-family house with a walk-out flat roof (there's actually a sliding glass door). It has no railing, the roof is currently tar-covered (with some kind of silver patches). I'm getting it ready to sell, and we're considering changing it into a deck. Someone suggested I just paint the roof white and attach a white wrought-iron railing. Is this a good idea? or is there a better way to do this without spending a lot of money?
I would recommend having a fiber glass deck installed. A professional would have to be hired and proper permits attained. A fiberglass deck would be the best solution and provide the best protection of future leaks. Railing systems can easily be installed over these types of decks.
If you want something less expensive I would just say put down an ice shield base over the existing roof and then lay a wood deck system over it. Eventually water problems will develop and the deck will have to be removed for the repair. I would hate to recommend this if the house is being sold and a problem is being left for someone else to deal with.

Front porch railings and concrete slab they're bolted into is sinking.?
We have a front porch with wrought iron railings. The railings are bolted into the columns and to the concrete slab. The slab is now sinking and pulling the railings out of the columns.
What can be done to fix this? Get the slab poured again? I want a permanent fix so this does not happen again.

I had a guy come by tonight to give me an estimate on drilling holes into the concrete and filling it with a material that will actually raise the small slab. It's only about 6x4 area, but it does need to be fixed since the slab is sinking a little (no more than an inch since late 2004) and the railings are tied into the slab/columns. They're called Concrete Raising of NC and it sounds interesting. Total cost would be $750, which is probably less than pouring the new aggregate slab.

OH NO ! Settling earth! Could be a water leak under your slab. Hate to be the bearer of possible bad news.. Or could just be poorly compacted and or lack of footers to begin with and now over time has settled.. =^( The only real solution is to just bulldoze your home and start from scratch. Nah. just kidding. Bust the patio up though and re-pour AFTER you make sure there is no water line leaking nearby,(if you are on a city meter, Go look at the meter when nobody else is home and see if the little triangle is spinning.(shouldn't be)). Tamp the ground very well! Pour footers around where the patio will be. and finally re-pour your pad. THEN FINALLY, you can fool with your columns and rails. Sorry, I know it's a lot of work but you want to do it right so you won't have to fight it again later!
