iron Metal How can I remove concrete from a metal object? Would acid damage iron or steel?
I have a large metal object caked in cement. How can I dissolve the cement off the object without damaging the metal? I believe it is iron, or a mix of iron with another metal. I need to remove quite a lot of cement from it.
Try freezing the concrete to 40 below zero (either scale.) It will become brittle and you should be able to break it with a few good blows of a sledge hammer.
Or drill some holes in the cement. Put water in the holes. Seal the holes. Or soak the concrete in water for day, letting the water get into all the existing cracks. Put that into a regular freezer set at a very low temperature so the water freezes fast. As the water freezes it will expand and hopefully will crack apart the cement.
Or put the concrete into a hydraulic press. start squeezing and the concrete will eventually be crushed. Hopefully before your metal object is crushed.

It dirties the clothes as well. How can I remove those dirt from my clothes?
Alot of the time those stains or marks come from melted fabric residue on the iron. When you iron a synthetic fabric with a too hot iron, quite often the fabric melts and sticks to the iron. Then when you go to iron again, some of the residue comes off on what you are ironing. When you are planning to iron a fabric like cotton or linen that requires a hot iron, and you have these marks on your iron, take an old cotton tea towel and run the iron over a few times to remove the residue. Each time you use the iron do this and you will remove a little more each time. Follow the temperature guide on the iron too. Using is really hot setting on a synthetic fabric will not get the wrinkles out and will more than likely melt the fabric.

what is the difference between a forged iron gate and metal/steel gate?
Im trying tog et a custom gate made and need to know the difference if any between a forged iron gate and metal/steel gate. What is better for a courtyard gate and what is the difference in cost?
Most likely they're both mild steel.
Forging refers to the process that was used to *form the metal into shape,* not necessarily the type of material itself.
Forging is the age old process of heating a metal bar until it's red hot, then hammering it into shape while it cools, then repeating the process over and over.
This is very time consuming, of course. Forging the entire gate would be impractical in this day and age. Usually, forging is only used to make some of the parts and decorative elements. Other simpler parts like rods and slats and posts are made of common structural steel shapes, like tubes, strips, or bars. These are cut and cold bent as needed. Then the whole structure is fitted and *arc welded* together.
In other cases, decorative parts of the gate are just bought from a catalog.
They come from a factory where they're mass-produced by casting.
Casting is the process of pouring molten steel into a mould, which then solidifies into the shape inside the mould. No hammering or hand work involved
Other non-decorative parts of the gate, again, would made out of structural steel stock, and the whole thing is still arc welded together.
In any case, if it's a custom job, the gate itself can still be considered to be largely crafted by hand.
So the basic difference is that using hand-forged parts in a gate requires more labor, and obviously will be more expensive. They are both steel so there is no real difference in functionality.
Forged items do have a slightly different look to them, however, few people would be able to tell one from the other, unless they had experience working with steel.
Also it's possible to cast and mass produce steel items in such a shape that it looks as if it was hand forged even though it wasn't..... Whatever shape you can make by forging, you can also make by casting.

I am thinking about putting drapes on them they already have 2 inch white wooden blinds on the windows. I have black wrought iron rods (pottery barn style) would I put the rod above the transom) or between the transom and the window. This is in our family room. THANKS. Because your transom is decorative you should consider leaving it uncovered. In my own home, we wanted to hide our transom, because it is old and cracked, so we went all the way to the ceiling and hid it.

iron furnishings What is this antique light used for?
I am an interior designer who has a client who can't identify the use of antique lamp she owns. It is old and a combination of iron and glass and is electric. It is about 36 inches tall. All this is in one peice. It has a 12"x12" platform on the top of emerald green glass which is uplighted from a torchere type lamp underneath. I would say it was a plant stand or display table of some kind. Her 83 year old mother insists that it is a piano light. This client has a very extensive and valuable antique collection of furnishings, accessories, paintings, fabulous vintage clothing, silver, linen, cars, etc. that was inheirited from her family members. So it is no telling what this thing is. Please help me!!!

iron Bookends What are some of the saddest/best folk songs you've heard?
I am making a mix CD for myself, for long drives alone and whatnot. I am looking for folky songs, or just songs on the slower side. They don't necessarily have to be sad, just something that catches your attention and makes you feel. Some examples of what I already have are "Bookends Theme" by Simon & Garfunkel, "Sunday Morning" by The Velvet Underground, "Gotta Have You" by The Weepies, and Sonic Youth's version of "Superstar". Can anyone help? I very much love Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Iron & Wine. Stuff in those areas.
I really like those songs too. So I would suggest checking out Coldplay. Don't go for their new album "Viva La Vida" cause it doesn't have the same vibe as the songs you listed above.
I would really recommend their old albums "Parachutes" and "Rush of Blood To the Head".
The songs may seem a little funky at first, but give them a few listens and they'll grow on you. Some of them are just really beautiful. Those are my two favorite albums by Coldplay.
