French wrought Can someone please explain to me all the candidates involved in the French presidential elections?
If it's possible that it's a non biased answer and could you explain to me the political parties each presidential candidate is part of and what each party's intention is if become president? Also some information on how the french government works would be useful. I know I'm asking a lot here, it's just it's for my french oral exam and I need as much info as possible in manageable chunks please. Politics has never been my strongest subject.

At last count, there were 12 for the first round of the election to be held Sunday the 22nd. Here's the short story:
The election should come down to a race between the Socialist candidate, Segloene Royal, and Nicolas Sarkozy, the conservative. Sarkozy is endorsed by the current conservative President Jacques Chirac (reluctantly, because the two men do not like one another). Mme Royal follows in the footsteps of Chirac's predecessor, President Francois Mitterrand. Most polls show Sarkozy with a small lead.
There are numerous other candidates, because in French presidential elections every different flavor of opinion runs its own nominee. You get different shades of conservatives on the ballot, you get centrists, the far right, Communists (and competing splinters within the Communists) and others. It's hard to get to know all the players unless you're in France.
Under the French constitution, brought in by President de Gaulle in the 1960s, the top two finishers in the first round meet in a runoff on May 6th, and this will decide the presidency. Most people expect that it will be Sarkozy against Royal, but this is not a foregone conclusion. In the 2002 presidential election, so many different flavors of leftists ran against one another that the far right, anti-immigration candidate, Jean-Marie LePen, sailed up betwen them and finished second, qualifying for the runoff. Frenchmen were treated to the spectacle of humiliated leftists having to swallow their pride and vote for the incumbent, President Chirac, because they hate LePen so much. Chirac won easily.
