there's a black mesh screen going around it....it sits on a wrought iron stand.........about 30 minutes after my boyfriend lit the very first fire in it i noticed red coals and ashes coming out from the bottom...........the metal on the pan just peeled open.....i later found out my boyfriend poured gas on the wood and lit it.........did that cause my fireplace to melt? i kind of think so but i am not positive?

Under normal circumstances, gasoline does burn hotter than wood, so It looks like this may have been the cause. HOWEVER, it sounds like the fireplace needed an insulator, such as sand or vermiculite to protect the lower pan from intense heat. Did it come with any information?

Hi, I currently own a 1931 Sears Roebuck home. It still has the original cast iron fireplace. All looks to be in good condition except the "heat exchanger"....basically the vent in the front of the fireplace that blows the hot air into the room....it's making a noise when I turn it on.
Appreciate if anyone has any guidance on how / where I can have this repaired so that it doesn't make a noise?

iron fireplace screens I need help on what colors to paint my walls in my living room?
My couches are a cranberry-ish color and are of the "Over stuffed" type. My coffee table is a big ottoman cover in the aged leather (Dark chocolate)that you usually see on a mans "smoking chair" in a library. I have a brick fireplace with a rought iron screen. I need to know what color to paint the walls, what color curtains, and what color accents pieces. I was thinking a dark brow curtains, maybe a mocha wall and amber colored accent pieces. Like a nice dark amber colored glass candle holders and bowls. ANY IDEAS!?!?
I think you color choices are good, I'd make the mocha color a bit lighter, with all those bold dark colors you could end up with them competing for attention and you could end up making a room look smaller than it really is, espeically if you don't have a lot of big windows for natural light. You could also through in some cranberry accents in the form of throw pillows/blankets or candles in you candle holders. Make sure the fabric of of your curtains matches the fabric of you other furniture in style. I.E. don't sheer light curtains if all the fabric is heavier, it will look out of place.
Also, never, ever trust the light in a paint store! It will look completely different in the light in your home than at the store! Take some sample home, cut them up and tape them on the wall and put them near your couch, chair, carpet/floor etc. Some paint companies offer inexpensive 2 oz samples in thier most popular colors. You can paint a 2x2 section with that and really see what it will look like. I've had many guests in my paint department who were so grateful for that because they loved the color in the store and hated it on the wall. 3 bucks for a sample verses 20 plus dollars for a gallon of paint you hate is a big difference. And most places won't take back mixed paint.

iron Fireplace Does anyone know if you need a firebrick in an old victorian cast iron fireplace? Is it necessary?
We have seen one on ebay and it doesnt have a firebrick with it. Not sure if we need one or not?

If you're just buying it for looks, no problem. If you plan to use it for heat, you need firebrick because, believe it or not, cast iron and steel do "burn" i.e. oxidize. At higher temperatures, the moisture in the fuel and combustion air release oxygen which combines with the iron to form iron oxide which will cause the surface of the iron to start "flaking" off. After a relatively short time it will burn right through. The firebrick lines the inside of your fireplace and protects the iron from the direct flame. It also has the important function of holding heat over night when the fire has burned down or out. With firebrick properly in place, your Victorian cast iron fireplace will last virtually "forever".
The good news is that firebrick is relatively easy to obtain and some firms will even customize it to fit the interior of your fireplace. So go for it. You'll love the cosy warmth off wood heat in your home.

I'm moving into a basement and it will be my bedroom and living area. It used to be the 2 car garage of the house - that should give you some sense of size. How will I divide up the two spaces? I also have a beautiful stacked stone fireplace on one side of the room and I can't decide if I should put the bedroom in the area with the fireplace or give the living room the fireplace. On the other side of the room is double french doors that lead to the outside. Also, I have antique furniture and a white iron bed. I'm trying to figure out a way to divide up this space and I've considered decorative screens and open shelving but still have no answers. This basement is contemporary and has new taupe colored carpet. How do I combine the two styles? Thanks for any input.
I suggest having your fireplace as a part of your living area. It is a natural focal point and it will be nice to have company over and have a warm fire to sit around. I truly love he idea of the decorative screens. you can get beautiful ones at antique stores. open shelves are also a nice idea at IKEA they have square open shelves in a range of different shades of wood. either way I suggest having an area rug in your living space and one in your bedroom area this will anchor these areas and make your living space look more established. as for combining the contemporary style of your living space with your antique furniture that should not be very hard. buy a few large contemporary pieces such as maybe a coffee table, couch, dresser and put your antiques around it. This will give your space a very eclectic feel without being overbearing.
