Hello to all, I have the chance to purchase a wrought iron piece that is from the late 1800's, it is wearing several coats of paint that look terrible, some of the original metal is exposed, some is under tons of paint, could someone advise me the best way to deal with that if I buy it?
Also it is cracked in one spot, a clean break, could a welder fix that? Thanks in advance.
I have a few options that you can choose.
1) The easiest is to take the piece to a local metal working shop. They can do everything for a reasonable price.
2) If you have to do it yourself; Home Depot rents many tools. I haven't seen a self-contained sand blasting unit though.
To sand blast your piece you will need a high volume air compressor and a sand blaster unit. You will also need to purchase sand or another abrasive medium.
It is very important to use either a full face respirator or a respirator and safety glasses. The dust from silica sand (the most common media) can damage your lungs. It's also advisable to wear coveralls or the like as the sand gets everywhere! (Can you say sand in your shorts?)
Take the piece somewhere that a lot of sand will not be a problem and have at it! once the piece is clean, "Rust-Mort" or a similar product uses phosphoric acid to convert the iron oxide to iron phosphate which doesn't rust. Then, use a good direct to metal paint. "Hammerite" or "Rustolium" will do the job. There are also textured paints some folks like.
3) you can use a paint stripping compound. I have never had much success with this option. Paint it on, wait, then remove it with the paint. I usually have to do this several times. The final step is repainting your piece with the above paint options.
Clean up and install your piece. Have a drink, you survived.

Callaway X-Forged Iron Set 2008 is good,but I recommend Callaway 09 X-Forged Irons. I moved from old callaway X12's (played with them for about 6 years) to the new X22's (played with them 2 months) and recently bought the 09 X-Forged Irons.The clubs play brilliantly and are very forgiving, but ball shape and control is not under discussion for these clubs. Today I went in to trade the X22's for a forged iron set, just purely because I want more feel and feedback. I'm not worried about distance. Accuracy is my game. I've hit a couple of balls with the Nike, Taylormade, Ping, and the Callaway. I must say, they all are exceptional, and it really needs a pro's touch to feel the difference. Not that I am, I just go for that's comfortable in my hands. I told the guy not to tell me what club he is giving me to hit and i really just focused on hitting the balls and not looking at the kind of club and persistently the results showed that my swing consistency with the X-forged was a little bit better than all the others. They hit sweet, they feel balanced... I just can't wait till I can go and play them.
