How to clean old unfinished knotty pine cabinets?
I have unfinished knotty pine kitchen cabinets [solid wood] that I don't want to alter because they were handmade by my father. They're very well made but the style is rustic with wrought iron hardware. I don't think that they've been deep cleaned since they were installed in 1950, and dust and kitchen grease have darkened them in places, while normal wear and some surface scratches have lightened some areas.
If I want to give them a facelift, is there a cleaning product that won't darken them? How would you restore them to a more uniform appearance? And if your recommendation is to sand them, please tell me what tools, what kind of sandpaper [grit #, etc.] I would need to do the job. Thanks so much!
I just cleaned mine with Murphy's Oil Soap. They were installed in 1960. Works like a charm! Purchase at nearly any store that carries furniture polish. I removed drawer pulls and hinges and cleaned those too. It requires a lot of elbow grease, lol. I am not sure about sanding since mine came out a lot better than I expected and I can get by with them for a few more years. I used an Old English Furniture Polish afterwards to give them some protection. Do an inside cabinet door first to see if it will look ok before you tackle the whole job. ...jj

Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows any trick in removing clay and iron stains from light coloured brick walls and from windows and grill doors. I have badly "iron stained" walls and fence (colourbond) and "impossible to remove clay" on my windows and pavers and on my black grill doors. All this was due to my bore water initially and now it's driving me insane with my house being the only one in the area with such stains!

It will acid-burn your bricks and make them a pukey yellow-greeny-yellow with a brand new kind of stain, "vanadium stain", and the rust stain will remain just the same. Muriatic acid will etch the glass, and it will definitely react with the metal on the grill doors severely corode the surface and disintegrate the metal turning it into a form of some kind of "salt". Brick manufacturers specifically advise AGAINST using muriatic acid, especially for light colour bricks, but even for normal red and dark bricks.
In the past, muriatic acid was used to dissolve cement smudges of normal red bricks....cement is basically limestone powder that was heated to 3000 degrees F to make it reactive and harden when mixed with water...and you know calcium or lime(stone) dissolves profusely in acid, but clay is not limestone or calcium, clay is microscopic quartz-type / silicate sand, and acid won't do as much at dissolving it, just etch or irritate it.
Some positive solutions which you could use safely, Klenztone, non-corrosive and environmentally safe (www.klenztone.com) or Marble Poultice from a marble shop, to gently scrub away the clay from the glass, and maybe even from the grill doors, and Vanatrol to remove the metalic stain from the brick without causing additional metalic staining or without "acid-burn". I am planning on buying the Iron Gym but my parents think it is going to break our door frame. If anyone has had it for a long time could you tell me if it has caused any damage to your door frame.
